So you’re committed to beginning a Personal Style (capsule) Wardrobe, congratulations! Everyday you will leave your house feeling fabulous. But first things first. Closet clean out! Yes, you need to make room for all the new perfect pieces you are going to start acquiring. I know it can be a little scary, but it needs to be done. I am of the mindset that you don’t bring in something new without getting rid of something old. Being organized is one of my favorite tasks. It may not be fun during the work, but the payoff is huge.
The research portion
Spend 30 to 60 minutes on Pinterest to get inspired. Whatever season it is, search for that season’s fashions. Pin what you like to a board called Curating My Personal Style. After this you should have an idea of what your current look should be.
- Set aside a few hours to do this job. Maybe invite a friend over for moral support.
- Find three bags in your house, one for donations, one for selling/consigning and one for the trash
- At first pass, look and see if there is anything you honestly haven’t worn in a year and that’s an automatic discard *
- Next, try on EVERYTHING. Be critical, does it flatter you? How do you feel wearing it? If it doesn’t make you feel fabulous, then decide which pile it belong in. Are stains or holes in it? Throw it away and replace it.
- Finally, get rid of the throw away and give aways asap! I don’t want you to be tempted to keep it.
Make a list of what you need to replace or add to your closet I have lists in my planner, or you can make a note in your phone, which ever works for you and is with you all the time. Refer back to your Pinterest board. Are there a lot of accessories that are drawing you to the looks? It it the bag she is carrying? Or maybe it’s a really jacket that you like. Don’t forget to add basics like t-shirts which are great for layering. I prefer to get higher quality t-shirts because the fit and fabric is so superior. I am a huge fan of Ibex merino wool basics because they are so soft and durable. I tend to buy v-necks or scoop necks because they show off my collarbones, a part of my body I happen to like.
Go forth and shop
Now the hunt begins! But there is no hurry. Sometimes you find things unexpectedly like I found my Michael Kors leather moto jacket. By all means, if you tossed out all your t-shirts, maybe replace a couple right away, online if you have to. But this part of the project should be most gratifying and fun. And remember, Do Not Settle for less than perfect! As you accumulate new pieces, I’d love to see them. Post them on Instagram and tag me @luxeodette with #Curatingpersonalstyle
Don’t forget, I will be adding articles on the categories I feel belong in everyone’s Personal Style Collection.
**Update! I have modified my brand content and will not be moving forward with this campaign
*If there is something in your closet you are absolutely IN LOVE with, save it, but you have to be seriously enamored. I still regret parting with a Givenchy black turtleneck years ago. If you have to, take it out of your closet and put it in a 4th bag labeled with today’s date. Stash it out of sight and in six months if you still have not missed or worn the items eliminate them!
